What if I am a homeowner?

By 1 January 2027, every private home, townhouse, and unit in Queensland must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed.

You need to install smoke alarms:

  • on every storey of the dwelling
  • in every bedroom
  • in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home
  • if there’s no hallway, between bedrooms and other living areas
  • on storeys without bedrooms, at least one alarm must be installed in the most likely path of exit

What if I am a landlord?

Since 1 January 2022, Queensland law requires you to install and maintain compliant smoke alarms in every rental property.

As a landlord, you must:

  • install photoelectric, interconnected alarms in line with legislation
  • test and clean each alarm within 30 days before a new tenancy starts or renews
  • ensure alarms are fitted in all required locations, including bedrooms, hallways, and exit paths

What if I am a tenant?

Your landlord must ensure alarms are tested and cleaned within 30 days before your lease starts or renews.

As a tenant, you are legally required to:

  • Test and clean each smoke alarm in your home at least once every 12 months
  • Report any faults to your landlord or property manager immediately
